I know it's a short chapter, but its the best I have right now.
Chapter Ten: Penelope
Just when I had thought the world couldn't get any worse, it got better.
I had two friends who wouldn't hurt me like Megan had. Who wouldn't judge me, hate me. They liked me for who I was, not because I was popular or smart or anything. But my life still didn't seem right. At least it was better.
Today was Selena's birthday. We, Elizabeth and I, had gotten her cake and presents, the whole deal. It was dark out now, night. I was laying in bed, staring up at the ceiling, not wanting to go to school ever again. True, I had two great friends there, but I didn't want to face Megan or Kate. Or Rachel. And definitely not Mark. It was hard to have to deal with people hating you. But I did have to go to school tomorrow, like it or not. I got out of bed. The idea of school bothered me.
I walked over to my window and opened it as wide as it would go. I pulled the curtains out of the way and rested my elbows on the windowsill as I leaned my head outside. It was a clear night, and all the stars were in the sky. I was reminded of a night several weeks ago, when I had seen a falling star, and made a wish. I had thought my wish had come true, but it hadn't. My luck had turned from good to bad to worse. It was only now that my luck was starting to get better. And it was because of Selena.
I went back to bed and willed myself to sleep.
It was the next morning, and I was waiting for the school bus. When the bus finally pulled up to the bus stop, I got on eagerly. I walked down the bus until I found an empty seat. I sat down and ignored what everyone said around me. That was something useful that Selena and Elizabeth had taught me. Ignore what everyone else thinks. Just be yourself. I placed my bag on the spot next to me, to save it for Selena and Elizabeth.
About ten minutes later, Selena got on the bus. I put my bag on my lap to make room for her.
"Where's Elizabeth?" I asked.
"She doesn't take the bus." Selena said, rolling her eyes as if I should have known that. "Besides, she has a doctor's appointment today, she's not coming."
"Okay." I said. I stared out the window, watching the streets go past. I waited for Selena to say something, but she ever did, and we spent the rest of the trip in silence.
At school, I walked to my first class of the day, Spanish. I didn't have any classes with Selena or Elizabeth, but I did have one class with Megan. Spanish. She had transferred out of 1st year Spanish up to 2nd year, where I was. This was my least favorite class of the day.
I sat down in my seat in the back of the class. I took out my notebook and pencil and began to doodle in the back of my notebook. When Megan walked into the room, I ignored her, and she ignored me. It was easier that way.
I pondered what Rachel had said when she had begged to be friends with me again. I saw right through it. She was never like that; Megan must have been talking through her. Rachel was more quiet, sensitive. I regretted putting her picture on the posters I had placed on the back of the stalls in the bathroom: where teachers would not notice them.
At the end of class, Megan walked up to me. "Evil." She whispered as she walked past me. "You are evil, and you will regret it." I ignored her.
I walked up to Rachel during lunch. Selena was late for lunch, again, and I used the opportunity to talk to Rachel, because Selena thought I didn't deserve them. Rachel was sitting on her own, and this was the best time to try. She was looking down at her lunch.
"Rachel." I said. She looked up. "Why did you beg to be friends with us?"
"That wasn't me. It was for Megan. She wanted to know what you would say." She said without emotion. I sat down next to her.
"You don't have to talk for her, you know. You can just be yourself." I said softly. She nodded. I walked back over to my table with Selena. She didn't say anything, she just continued eating her lunch. I took out my lunch and began to eat. It wasn't long before Rachel sat down next to us. We all ate in silence.
The next day, Rachel joined Elizabeth, Selena and me in our group. We all understood that we were all friends, and it was all good.
Megan might not like me, and I didn't know about Kate, but Rachel was friends with me again, and I was still friends with Selena and Elizabeth. My life seemed to be turning for the better. Even though my wish hadn't come true, or it had gone bad, my life didn't suck. I was happy, with all my friends. The only wish I had now was to be happy, and it had just come true.
